‘6 Balloons’ Trailer: Dave Franco & Abbi Jacobson Lead Netflix Addiction Drama
Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming original movie 6 Balloons, an addiction drama from writer/director Marja-Lewis Ryan. The film takes place over the course of one night and stars Abbi Jacobson as a woman who drives across L.A. with her heroin addict brother (Dave Franco) in search of a detox center, with his two-year-old daughter in tow. Ryan is an up and coming filmmaker who was tapped to write the Splash reboot for Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell, and who is also spearheading the TV sequel to The L Word, but 6 Balloons looks to be a very dark, harrowing debut feature.
There’s a claustrophobic and realistic approach to the cinematography that no doubt puts the viewer in the shoes of the characters, and that likely results in a pretty emotional experience. This feels like one of those incredibly intimate indies that plays at Sundance and only gets a tiny theatrical release, so it’s kind of neat to see this kind of movie pop up as a Netflix original. The streaming giant is clearly in the market of making all kinds of films, and that ranges from blockbusters like Bright, action-comedies like Game Over, Man!, and character-centric dramas like 6 Balloons.
The film boasts Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin as producers, and I’m most struck by Jacobson’s performance here. The actress is best known as one half of the starring duo of Broad City, where she’s showcased tremendous comedy skills, but here she’s in full drama territory. Ditto to Franco, and I’m curious to see how the final result stacks up.
