‘The Dark Crystal’ Prequel Series Coming to Netflix
All your nostalgia belongs to Hollywood, and much of it is now owned by Netflix. The streaming service announced today a partnership with The Jim Henson Company to produce a new series based on the 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal. Don’t worry, it will involve practical puppets. And the imagination of Brian Froud, the creature, costume and conceptual designer on the original.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistence will be a 10-episode prequel series about three Gelflng characters rebelling against the Skeksis. Louis Leterrier, who directed The Incredible Hulk and the Clash of the Titans remake, is directing the whole thing. There will be some digital effects, but as you can see in the teaser below, the look and feel of The Dark Crystal is being mostly retained.
It should be a surprise that The Dark Crystal is returning. Not because just about everything from the ’80s and ’90s are being resurrected but specifically because fantasy properties from the time seem ripe for sequels. Jim Henson’s Labyrinth is getting a sequel of some kind, for instance. The Dark Crystal is easier to bring back because it has no human characters or stars.
The original The Dark Crystal was the directorial collaboration of Henson, marking his second feature at the helm, and Frank Oz, who made his debut in that capacity. Released at Christmastime in 1982, it wasn’t a hit but peformed well enough and later became a cult classic. A sequel was planned but then scrapped a decade ago. The small screen is where properties live on these days anyway.
