Marvel Announces Secret Warriors Animated Movie & Voice Cast

Marvel has announced a new animated film called Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors that will bring together a wide range of their heroes. While Marvel has continued to expand their reach in theaters and across TV, they’ve never really done as well in the animated movie department. Shows like Ultimate Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy have been well-recevied, but many of Marvel’s animated films feel like undercooked products compared to DC’s vast universe.

That trend could be changing, however, as Marvel looks to be putting a heavy focus on their animated output moving forward. Thank to Sony, Miles Morales will soon lead his own Spider-Man animated movie. The project will benefit from both the new series Marvel’s Spider-Man and the hit Spider-Man: Homecoming, giving fans a non-Peter Parker story to focus on. Now, it looks as if Marvel is pulling a similar move by uniting some of their biggest names with some up-and-comers for a new animated venture.

BuzzFeed just announced a new animated Marvel film coming in 2018 dubbed Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, along with a new featurette focusing on the cast and their characters. The project will revolve around a varied team of heroes, including Captain Marvel, Quake, Ms. Marvel, and Squirrel Girl and will kick off with six 4-minute digital shorts before the film itself debuts. Voicing the heroes will be an impressive cast, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Chloe Bennet as her character Quake and her co-star Ming-Na Wen playing the villainous Hala. Check out the first poster below along with more information on the cast and heroes:

Along with Bennet voicing Quake, Squirrel Girl will be brought to life by Milana Vayntrub, who’s set to play the live-action character in New Warriors. Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, meanwhile, will be voiced by Kathreen Khavari and Kim Raver, respectively. Like Bennet and Vayntrub, Khavari has played her character before as she voices Ms. Marvel on Avengers Assemble.

Rounding out the roster will be Miss America Chavez (Cierra Ramirez), Inferno (Tyler Posey), Patriot (Kamil McFadden), Exile (Booboo Stewart), and Tippy Toe and Lockjaw (Dee Bradley Baker). Both Inferno and Exile are Inhumans like Ms. Marvel, who will bring her comic book friend Lockjaw. Tippy Toe, meanwhile, is Squirrel Girl’s main rodent friend. As for Patriot, it’s not clear if he’ll be the Eli Bradley or more recent Rayshaun Lucas take on the character, but his look seems to lean towards the former. Wen’s character Hala, meanwhile, is a newer Guardians of the Galaxy villain – a Kree Accusser seeking revenge for the desturction of her homeworld and namesake.

The most intriguing addition, however, is Dove Cameron as Ghost-Spider. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because it’s a new moniker for the Gwen Stacey Spider-Woman, often referred to as Spider-Gwen. The name change is an interesting one, evoking the character’s iconic costume and separating the hero’s identity from their gender and Spider-Man. Dove Cameron recently joined Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a mystery role, though it’s doubtful Ghost-Spider or Gwen Stacey is headed to the show. Regardless, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors looks to be an exciting project for fans of Marvel TV and comics.
