First ‘XX’ Trailer Reveals a New Kind of Horror Anthology
When done right, horror anthologies are a thing of twisted beauty. And to do one right, you need a specific hook to unite everything together. Without one, you’re just making a bunch of random short films that happen to be arbitrarily stuck together.
Thankfully the new horror anthology XX, which will soon premiere at Sundance, has a rather unique hook to it: every segment is written and directed by women. And if you happen to pay attention to the indie horror world, it’s a very impressive talent roster, too. It includes:
Juvanka Vuckovic, the former editor of the great horror magazine Rue Morgue.
Annie Clark, AKA the musician St. Vincent making her filmmaking debut.
Roxanne Benjamin, a writer and producer on a string of great horror movies, including the horror anthologies V/H/S and Southbound.”
Karyn Kusama, the director of the underrated Jennifer’s Body and The Invitation, which was one of the best horror movies of 2016.
The trailer obviously doesn’t have time to tell us exactly what every segment is about (nor would we want to know), but it does setup plenty of freaky imagery. Check it out.
XX will premiere at Sundance this month. Then it will hit theaters and VOD on February 17.
