EXCLUSIVE Atomic Blonde Video: The Wild West Town of East Berlin
The R-Rated spy thriller Atomic Blonde hits shelves today on Blu-Ray and we have an exclusive clip taking viewers behind the scenes and the iron curtain into the surreal world of East Berlin that the film explored. Titled “Wild West Town” this featurette showcases the gorgeous production design and excruciating detail that went into the Berlin-Black market featured in the film as well as the minds of the characters who run it, Percival (James McAvoy) and Merkel (Bill Skargard).
Directed by David Leitch (John Wick and currently in post production on Deadpool 2), Atomic Blonde tells the story of Charlize Theron’s Lorraine Broughton who is sent to Berlin to uncover a traitor who may have revealed the extent of the spy network of the collected Western powers. Lorraine enters a mysterious and gorgeously crafted world of black market dealings and espionage escapades set against a backdrop of the mid-to-late 80s music, looks, and colors.
This clip features commentary by James McAvoy (X-Men: First class), Bill Skargard (It, 2017), Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Leitch, and breaks down the nature of the black market that McAvoy and Sarkgard have set up in Berlin. Calling the film a “mash-up of historical fiction and real history” the film’s actors detail the history behind Berlin’s black market which is based on a real place. McAvoy calls it a “wild west kind of town” where “drugs and contraband” are everywhere.
The clip also showcases just how closely everyone lived during that period in history, particularly in Berlin. Co-Producer Anthony Johnson who wrote The Coldest City which formed the basis for Atomic Blonde calls Berlin it’s own little bubble for good reason. In a town where the fate of the world was decided, the film ably showcases just how people who were trapped and sought out that situation lived and made decent livings for themselves.
Called a “high stakes global action thriller” Atomic Blonde is currently sitting at a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and took in a respectable 95 million at the box office. The film is notable for its stylized action scenes, beautiful colors, and a powerful star in Charlize Theron. Theron delivered a James Bond-worthy performance without the glittering cars, martinis, and noticeable traditional garb associated with spies, something that the film’s Blu-ray celebrates.
Crafting a world that’s both real and ethereal is no mean feat but both the actors and directors behind the film clearly leaned into real history and did their homework making a fun and engaging thriller with a genuinely intelligent basis. Fans of the film and the history behind it can learn more on the Blu-ray, available today from retailers.
Atomic Blonde releases on 4K/Blu-ray/DVD November 14, 2017 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
