Avengers: Infinity War Fans Theorize Heimdall’s Death
A new Thor toy for Avengers: Infinity War could be teasing of the death of Heimdall. Played by Idris Elba in the Thor franchise, the Gatekeeper has taken a major role in Chris Hemsworth’s Marvel film series, but it always felt like he was just on the sidelines. Now, it seems like before his character potentially is fully utilized, he has already met his end.
Elba is perhaps one of the most underserved actors in the MCU. With his caliber and Heimdall’s really nifty characterization, Marvel Studios could’ve given him a bigger role and a more memorable arc. Given his super-sensory capabilities and God-like skills, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could really use his help, especially with what’s coming to them. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be the case. The British actor is unconfirmed for Infinity War, but that doesn’t mean that he won’t have a cameo, even if it was just for him to die.
The Bifrost Sword has always been associated with Heimdall and is the only person to ever really wielded it. Even in Thor: Ragnarok, he snuck back in for it and eventually used it to protect the people of Asgard from Hela’s minions. So why is Thor suddenly carrying it around? Readers of Mary Sue, who first spotted the Thor merchandise featuring the Hofund, worriedly theorized that Heimdall may have met his end. Considering the last time we’ve seen him was before he, alongside everyone else in the Asgardian refugee ship, was about to meet Thanos and his crew, this is not too farfetched.
At this point, it’s hard to tell what went down on Sanctuary II. But piecing the footage from Infinity War that we’ve seen so far, the Russos are definitely giving us the impression that Thanos isn’t there to give the Asgardians a lift to Earth. The floor-filled with seeming lifeless bodies, Loki’s terrified expression while handing the Tesseract (both from the first trailer) and the mad Titan trying to crush Thor’s head with his bare hands (from the D23/SDCC trailer), all hint that it won’t be well for Thor’s people. Multiple deaths are a high possibility and if Heimdall is indeed one of the unlucky ones who didn’t survive, we wonder what happened to Valkyrie, Korg, and Miek.
On the flipside, it’s also possible that Heimdall just lent his sword to Thor while the new King of Asgard still doesn’t have a weapon to replace his Mjolnir. This, however, defeats the purpose of Odinson coming to terms that his real power lies within him and not with his hammer. Additionally, we know that Thor will eventually wield a slightly different version the Mjolnir named Stormbreaker (rumor has it that he will create it himself with the help of Rocket and Groot). So unless he has a specific reason for carrying the Hofund around, it doesn’t make sense that he’s wielding it instead of Heimdall.
